Want More Intuition? Give It a Path to Follow

People frequently ask me, “How do I become more intuitive? How can I hear my angels better?”

Intuition is, by definition, an act of reading energy. On the whole there are two ways you can do this:

  1. You can chase the energy around and try to read it whenever you happen to intersect with it.
  2. You can set up a system through which the energy flows to you.

You might imagine that approach #1 can be rather difficult, especially for someone who’s just learning about energy. How do you chase something you can’t recognize? As you become familiar with it, you understand that on its own, energy is formless and directionless. It needs something to tell it where to go so that you can connect with it. It needs a system.

Every good intuitive works with a system that makes it easy for the energy to flow to them. A ritual is one kind of system. A process or protocol may be another kind of system, like when medical intuitive Mona Lisa Schulz scans the body from head to toe, one organ at a time. Tarot and oracle cards are systems. If you want to hear your guides, create and regularly practice rituals that create moments where you can surrender to intuition. For example, a few of my friends have daily teatime with their guides. When I sit down to write my eZine articles, I clear my desk and light a candle; it’s my way of saying to myself and my angels, “Insert guidance here.”

Energy healing is a great example of this interplay between structure and intuition. At its core, any energy healing modality is a process for assessing and moving energy. In Integrated Energy Therapy (IET) we work with a specific step-by-step process that follow a map of emotions within the body. It’s a system that allows us to visit each location on the map and step into a state of purely intuitive connection with the Angels in order to change the client’s energy – but within the specific context of the energy held at that particular spot of cellular memory. We even have a specific protocol that we follow at each location – energize, trigger, pull, integrate – but the “how” in each of those four steps is a very trusting “energy follows intention” moment. When I try to describe how to energize, trigger, pull, or integrate, there’s always an element of trust: “Let it happen.

Orange figure trying to figure out a puzzle using a magnifying glassImagine how this process would work (or wouldn’t) without that balance of process and energy. In an all-process construct, we’d follow the procedures but at each location on the map we’d be stuck in our intellect trying to figure out how to get the energy to move. It’s not the kind of “how” that the intellect likes – you don’t reach in with a screwdriver or chisel and pull the energy out. It’s a puzzle that the intellect can’t solve.

Meanwhile, an all-intuitive approach would be just as ineffective. In my years with healing I have both given and received sessions that were purely intuitive with no structure. (Not many, thankfully.) They were amazingly beautiful experiences full of insight and imagery – but in the end they accomplished nothing. The “let’s see where Spirit takes us” approach with no end goal or way to get there is like fine art: We want to appreciate the value of something so purely beautiful, but in the world of endless to-do lists and limited time, it’s something we don’t easily make room for in our day or our wallets.

What we get when we combine process and energy, as the process of IET does, is a system through which energy can flow. We know where we want the energy to flow to (our intention such as healing, clarity, or purpose) and we provide it a path to get there through our hands at each of the mapped locations. Then we let intuition take over and let the energy do its thing in ways that human intellect could not create on its own.

So there’s the answer. If you want to be more intuitive, choose what system, ritual, or practice you’re going to use to connect with the intuitive energy, then commit to using it regularly and you’ll see your gifts blossom.

Your turn

Do you have any processes or rituals that help you connect with your intuition?

If not, does anything spring to mind right now that you might try this week? (Maybe something you’ve thought of before but not followed through on?)
