What It Really Means to “Get Your House in Order”

The phrase “get your house in order” popped into my head the other day with a clear inspiration from Spirit that I needed to write about it.

It comes from somewhere in the Bible, which I do regard a source of spiritual wisdom, although one that needs to be taken with a grain of salt because so many men have added their interpretations of the original messages. But if you know what to look for, there’s a lot in the Bible that aligns closely with the New Age spiritual teachings we engage in now.

As it turns out, “getting your house in order” is one of those Biblical messages that fits our current understanding, once we strip away what it doesn’t mean.

It definitely doesn’t mean what I thought it meant as a kid, which was that God was gonna come check how clean my room was, just like my mother did. LOL.

If the idea of “getting your house in order” instilled in you any sense of impending judgment or pressure to perform, then let’s free you of that right now.

It is a teaching about worthiness, but so many people have it backwards, as if God (or whatever you personally call the Divine) sits on a throne apart from us, until we do the right things to be deemed worthy.

Here’s the truth: You are already worthy of God. Source energy flows through your cells, and what could be more worthy than having the presence of the Divine literally within you?

“Getting your house in order” refers to your internal house – yourself. It means freeing yourself of the thought that you aren’t already worthy of God.

Getting your house in order isn’t a test you have to pass. It’s a state to achieve – the same state of balanced chakras, high vibes, released limiting beliefs, and healed Core Wounds that you’re already working toward, so that you can align yourself with the Divine.

When you do get yourself in order, God doesn’t come to meet you, nor do you rise to meet God – because you never “unmet” God. You’ve just imagined for a while that you were separate while living in the density of this human existence.

As A Course in Miracles teaches, this alignment can happen in an instant. There are no internal or external requirements, no particular amount of time that has to elapse. In any given moment you can drop all thoughts of unworthiness and let your mind relax so that you naturally rise to a frequency that aligns with the Divine.

When your internal self is in order, your external life naturally follows suit because “As within, so without.” I do mean that the external happens naturally – effortlessly, because you’re aligned with the Source of all wisdom and power to support the execution of your desires.

It’s sad how much time we’ve spent doing this backwards, working on the external stuff first and making time for the internal stuff only after our external obligations were fulfilled. The irony being, if we did the internal stuff first, then the external would have been easier and turned out better.

Certainly, achieving alignment with the Divine is easier and more frequent when you’ve healed the Core Wound of unworthiness, but only in the sense that our wounds distract us from our worthiness, and healing wounds removes distractions. Even with your wounds, someone or something can penetrate those distractions and remind you of your worthiness, so that you can snap yourself back into alignment in an instant.

Of course, it would be nice not to keep flip-flopping between worthy and unworthy, right?

Because you do flip-flop, getting your house in order is something you’ll have to keep repeating, just as your literal house doesn’t stay clean because you cleaned it once.

But that’s OK, right? After all, isn’t working to get into alignment with the Divine worth the reward of experiencing tangible the benefits throughout your life?
