2025 changed my attitude about meditation.

Even though I’d become a very powerful healer and spiritual teacher since first stepping onto my spiritual path in 2002, meditation had never played a significant role in my life.

I thought, "I'm already highly connected and intuitive, and magical things happen in my life all the time—what do I need meditation for?" 

I have to admit, even as I was creating meditations for others, I wasn't really doing any myself. 

That changed in 2025, because 2025 was so...disruptive. I could choose a more derogatory word to describe the year, but I appreciate how "disruptive," like being a "disruptor," hints at the benefit of having our inner and outer worlds shaken up for an actual purpose, not just to fuck with us.

During 2025, every layer of my ego was challenged, in the way that an exfoliating body scrub in a Korean spa aggressively rubs your skin raw so that a few days later, you will be soft and smooth as a newborn. I knew it was all for good but it was incredibly uncomfortable.

Plenty of days I wanted to curl up in a ball and hide from the aggressive scrubbing that 2025 was giving me. I was able to sufficiently tune out what was happening in my outer world, but the many retrogrades, all the outer planets changing signs and conjuncting major placements in my chart, and frequent multi-day void-of-course moons challenged every single idea of how a "productive" life was supposed to look.

The only choice I had was to spend that time going within. The only way I was able to stay planted in my reality, focused on my goals and making any progress, was by finally surrendering to the many nudges that told me to start meditating daily.

Sometime in August, I started meditating every morning. It actually helped. I often did it while I was still in bed, and so started getting out of bed quicker instead of hanging out there for four hours. (That change helped me see how much of my "calm and peace" had actually been escapism.) 

In September, from a place of pure knowing and inspiration, I added two more meditations at noon and 5:30 PM.

This is where I discovered the meditation hack that should have been obvious but I had never considered it: It’s better to do three short meditations each day than one long meditation. 

It occurs to me now that some spiritual traditions encourage this—I suppose it's part of why Muslims pray five times a day—but having been a spiritual independent since age 18, I had no such teachings. Plus, I needed the lived experience to show me why to do it. And I suppose, it wasn't time until now.

Meditating 2-3 times per day for 5-10 minutes means I'm repeatedly realigning my energy and calming my nervous system instead of letting the effects of the day accumulate.

Plus, a 30-minute meditation sounds way too long if I'm already feeling overwhelmed. But 5-10 minutes? Totally doable!

Along the way, I discovered a second meditation hack: The type of meditation matters.

If a meditation sends me off into the cosmos or to some imagined "happy place," at a minimum it’s contradicting the message that all the wisdom, love, and power of the divine is already within me...

…and at worst, it encourages dissociation, a tendency I spent years undoing after realizing my childhood trauma had me looking at myself from the outside much of the time instead of visualizing from within.

But a meditation that brings divine energy INTO my body, so that my cells resonate with it and remember how divine I already am? Mmm, that's deliciously powerful! 

This mode of meditation is also incredibly calming to my nervous system—and when I'm done, I feel alive and ready to work instead of dreamy and ready to sleep. It's the only way I'd be able to meditate in the middle of the day!

By doing the RIGHT meditation MULTIPLE times per day, this is where the real magic started to happen. I think of it primarily as, I changed my default settings. Because of how blessed my life already was, I hadn't realized how often in a day I wasn't aligned with Spirit until I did the work to get more aligned. More alignment brought more clarity, more ability to focus and complete tasks, more inspiration, and more magical synchronicities.

Let me say why that is: We talk about needing to surrender and receive. Receptivity isn't an action—it's a state of being. It's about being the vessel that receives our infinite Spirits—not just when we have a particular reason to stop and think of doing it, but without having to stop and think of it. Intellect and overthinking push Spirit away. Letting the day's effects accumulate, instead of counteracting them throughout the day, means moving further away from the frequency of Spirit and having to work harder to get back to it. Pausing to meditate throughout the day retrains the mind—changes the "default setting"—to one of receiving before thinking. (Not instead of thinking, simply before.)

Because of this experience, my tune has changed: I now agree that anyone who wants to live a Spirit-led life MUST meditate—not for hours but with short, periodic meditations that bring focus INTO their bodies, realigning with the divinity that’s already in there, until their default settings eventually change to align with Spirit instead of ego. It might not everything they need, but it's the solid foundation.
